Large Pine Cones: Natural Longleaf Pine Cones for Decor & Crafts

Some pine cones fit in your palm. Our large pine cones fill both hands. At about 8" long and 5" wide, these Longleaf Pine Cones bring real presence to a mantel, wreath, or holiday table. If you've been hunting for large pine cones for decorating, you won't get this look from the small cones sold at craft stores.

From Our Longleaf Pine Straw Fields to Your Front Door

If you've spread our Longleaf Pine Straw in your beds, you already know the beautiful, natural products that come from these amazing trees. Our pine cones come from the same longleaf pine fields that produce our premium pine straw. The tall, slow-growing longleaf pine is native to the Southern coastal plain and grows some of the largest cones of any pine in the eastern U.S.

Every fall the mature cones drop to the forest floor. We gather them, clean them, and box them up. Their natural variety is what makes them look so good grouped together. Once you've held a longleaf pine cone, the ordinary ones look tiny.

Why Decorators Love Our Large Decorative Pine Cones

  • Extra large: about 8" long × 5" wide, roughly two to three times the size of a typical craft-store cone. A few go a long way.
  • Clean and ready to use: cleaned before they're boxed, so you can unpack them and start decorating without sorting through dirt and debris.
  • 100% natural: real longleaf pine cones, not painted, scented, or artificial. Leave them natural or finish them however you'd like.
  • Made for the holidays and beyond: Fall harvest tables, Thanksgiving centerpieces, Christmas wreaths and garland, and winter displays that last for years to come.
  • Large craft pine cones: sturdy, open scales are easy to paint, glitter, wire into wreaths, or cut into pine cone "flowers."
  • From a grower you know: the same fields and the same team behind Mid-Atlantic Pine Straw.

Christmas Decorations with Large Pine Cones (and More Ideas)

Decorating with large pine cones is one of the easiest ways to make a space feel seasonal. A few of our favorite large pine cone Christmas decorations and year-round ideas:

  • Tablescapes: run a line of cones down a table runner with candles and greenery.
  • Bowls and baskets: a wooden bowl of large pine cones is the easiest seasonal display there is.
  • Wreaths and garland: wire cones onto a grapevine or evergreen base for a full, rustic look.
  • Porch and entryway: fill a lantern, urn, or crate by the front door.
  • Under the tree: tuck cones around the tree skirt, or hang smaller sections as ornaments.
  • Mantels and shelves: mix cones with string lights, cinnamon sticks, or dried oranges.
  • Kids' crafts and gifts: paint the tips white for a "snow-dipped" look, or tie on ribbon for package toppers.

Longleaf Pine Cone FAQs

How big is a longleaf pine cone? Ours average about 8" long and 5" wide. Longleaf pines produce some of the largest cones of any eastern pine, often 6–10 inches long.

Are these extra large pine cones the same ones used in your pine cone mulch? Yes! The only difference is that our Cones are whole, display-quality cones picked for decorating. If you want pine cones for your garden beds, see our Shredded Pine Cone Mulch.

Can I cut longleaf pine cones for crafts, like pine cone flowers? Yes. Their large, thick scales are great for pine cone "flowers" and slices. Cut across the cone with garden shears or a fine-tooth saw to make a flower-shaped round, then paint or seal it if you like. Wear gloves, since the scale tips can be sharp.

Will they open or close indoors? Pine cones naturally open in dry air and close up a bit in humid air. Inside a heated home they'll stay open and full.

Can I use them outdoors? Yes. They're natural and hold up well on porches and in planters through the season. Keep in mind that rain and humidity can make them close up temporarily, and they'll open again once they dry.

How can I order? You can order directly on this page. We have 2 box sizes: Small holds 10-12 cones while Medium holds 32-34 cones.

We also have Cones available in large Tote Bags that hold roughly 600 cones. Please email us if you need a tote (or more). Info@MidAtlanticPineStraw.com
