Salt Hay Mulch - The Best Mulch for Vegetable Gardens, Raised Beds, and Overseeding Lawns

Salt Hay is the mulch that serious vegetable gardeners reach for. Harvested from coastal salt marshes, it is naturally weed-seed-free and completely chemical-free, making it the safest and most effective mulch for food gardens, raised beds, strawberry patches, and any area where you cannot afford unwanted growth or contamination.

Our Salt Hay is available for local delivery in the Downingtown, PA area or shipped directly to your door in a convenient box with free shipping.

Why Salt Hay is the Preferred Mulch for Vegetable Gardeners

Naturally Weed-Seed-Free

Salt marsh grasses do not produce viable seeds the way terrestrial grasses do. You will not introduce new weeds into your garden beds.

No Chemicals or Dyes

100% natural, untreated, and unprocessed. Safe for edible plants, children, and pets - exactly what you want around food crops.

Excellent Moisture Retention

A 2 - 3 inch layer of salt hay dramatically reduces soil moisture loss, meaning less watering and more consistent growing conditions.

Insulates Roots

Salt hay's loose, airy structure insulates soil from temperature swings -- keeping roots warmer in early Spring & Fall and cooler in summer heat.

Easy to Work With

Lightweight and easy to spread by hand. No wheelbarrow needed. Rake it back easily at planting time and re-apply after transplanting seedlings.

Improves Soil Over Time

As salt hay slowly breaks down, it adds organic matter to your soil -- building structure and feeding beneficial microbial activity in the long run.

Best Uses for Salt Hay Mulch

       Vegetable gardens and raised beds

Strawberry patches (the traditional use - keeps berries off the soil and deters slugs)

Garlic and root vegetable beds (insulates over winter and reduces heaving)

Newly seeded lawns (protects seed from birds and erosion while allowing air and water through)

       Blueberry bushes and berry patches

       Perennial beds and cutting gardens

       Cold frames and overwintering protection

How to Apply Salt Hay Mulch

Apply salt hay in a layer 2 to 3 inches deep around established plants. For newly seeded areas, a thinner layer of 1 to 1.5 inches allows seedlings to grow through while protecting the soil surface. Rake back or part the mulch when transplanting seedlings, then tuck it back around the base of plants. Top-dress annually to maintain coverage as the hay slowly breaks down.

How Much Do You Need?

One bale of salt hay covers approximately 400 to 500 square feet at a 1.5" depth. When in doubt, order extra - unused bales store well in a dry location.
